Herbert’s original series were heralded as landmarks of modern sci-fi. Its use of fantastical elements to comment on the horrors and problems of contemporary society and, more broadly, its effort to reflect and dissect humanity is now what defines sci-fi as a genre. Riding out of the shadow of David Lynch’s infamous 1984 adaptation and arriving after a long year-and-a-half of pandemic closures, restrictions, and production delays, Dune was a much-needed jumpstart to a broken and straggling film industry. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune hit theatres in October 2021 and sent shockwaves around the world, succeeding where four other directors had failed to adapt Frank Herbert’s notoriously dense and complex 1965 novel of the same name.
